What is the Double Marker Test?

The Double Marker Test is a blood test done between the 9th and 13th week of pregnancy to check if the baby might have genetic problems like Down syndrome. It checks two specific markers: Free Beta hCG (a hormone produced during pregnancy) and PAPP-A (a protein produced by the placenta).

Why is it Important?

Early detection of conditions such as Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21), Trisomy 18, and other genetic disorders helps parents and doctors prepare better. The test is especially recommended for women aged 35 or older, those with a family history of genetic disorders, or those with complications in previous pregnancies.

How is it Done?

  1. A small blood sample is collected from the mother's arm.
  2. The sample is sent to a laboratory to test for Free Beta hCG and PAPP-A levels.
  3. Results come back in a few days, showing the risk as low or high.

Understanding Results

  • Low Risk: Chances of genetic problems are low; continue regular prenatal care.
  • High Risk: Further tests like the Triple Marker Test or Amniocentesis may be recommended.

Cost and Safety

The Double Marker Test costs approximately ₹2,500 to ₹5,000. It is completely safe for both mother and baby — no fasting or special preparation is required. Yashoda IVF Centre in Mumbai offers competitive pricing with quality care.
